The current governor of Nyeri is Hon. Mutahi Kahiga. He was born on 14th July 1962  at Gitathi-ini, in Nyeri town in Nyeri County. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Education from Kenyatta University and a Master’s degree in Education Administration from the University of Nairobi.

Before becoming the governor, Mutahi Kahiga was a member of the Nyeri County Assembly and served as the deputy governor under the late governor, Hon. Wahome Gakuru, until his untimely death in a tragic road accident.

The Journey to Becoming Governor

After the demise of the late governor, Hon. Wahome Gakuru, Mutahi Kahiga took over as the acting governor in November 2017. Following the constitutional provisions, he was sworn in as the governor on 13th February 2018. In the gubernatorial by-election held on 24th November 2017, he ran as an independent candidate and won with over 210,000 votes.
